Danny can't wait for his title shotFrom 'www.thisiskent.co.uk'
Both his De Graaf team and the Pembury teenager himself know they are going to have to eradicate these errors if they are going to mount a serious title challenge in 2009.
But that, a shot at the title, is most certainly what Webb is thinking about now. He has a brand new Aprilia for next year and is confident of being right up there, with fellow Brits Scott Redding and Bradley Smith, at the sharp end.
"Pre-season starts in February so it's just about doing physical training between now and then," he said. " I want to get mega-fit and then be unstoppable once the racing begins. I'm hoping to be fighting for the championship. Scott will have a factory bike as will Bradley so it will be great for the three of us to be bossing the big boys around."
The 2008 season started in some style for Webb. Under the floodlights of Qatar he raced to a career best sixth place. A crash in Jerez followed but then he was right back on it in Portugal, qualifying on the front row for the first time and then racing to a brilliant fifth position. Then a tale of woe ensued. He crashed in China, was pointless in France, crashed in Italy, came 11th in Catalunya before disaster struck in front of his home fans at Donington Park.
He didn't even complete one lap as he was taken out by Alexis Masbou and broke his right collar bone. He admits it's still "messed up" but will be having an operation during the winter to put things right.
Sadly, for the rest of the season, it was a case of riding through the pain.
"It was going really well at the beginning, and to be honest it was pretty good all year," Webb admitted. "We were very fast on quite a few occasions but just had a few too many crashes. It will get better next year – I've just got to start getting some consistency. The team could have worked with Aprilia a little bit more, if they had, some of the little mechanical things wouldn't have happened. I'm sure they will do next season."
Things began to pick up again for Webb after the summer break. Despite another crash in Brno, he finished 14th at the next round in Misano. At Indianapolis he took a front row start and although the race didn't go to plan he was soon off on the Pacific leg of the season and the weekend that turned out to be his highlight of the whole year.
"In Malaysia I was in the top five all weekend. There were only two riders with good, good race pace – me and Gabor Talmacsi. In the end I had a problem with the bike but I knew I could have been running up there with him."
It's going to be a long hard winter for Webb but he has another year's experience under his belt and is sure to be right up there when the lights go green on the 2009 season.

The last race of the season was a race to forget. The whole weekend the DeGraaf Grand Prix riders were able to set some good lap times and their was hope for some good results.
Danny Webb had already technical problems at the sighting lap. The bike wouldn’t react proper at the throttle and the team tried to fix this as good as they could. With good hope Danny started his race but the bike didn’t react and Webb dropped back to last. The British youngster tried to make up the lost positions but crashed in the sixth lap with a big highsider but luckily he had no injuries.
Danny Webb (DNF): “This weekend was the last weekend off the season and it hasn’t been too good. We will forget this and concentrate on next year for going for the title. The race was not so good. We had a small crash in the warm up and it interfered with some wires going to the ignition box. We had a problem with this off the start and the whole way through the race and it caught me out in the end. I had a big crash but these things happen and this year is finished now. We know we have the speed. And we have a really good bike for 2009 season and it is my change to go for the title. I would like to thank my team a lot for being so strong over the weekend.”

Dutchman Hugo van den Berg had some technical problems and missed half an hour of the session.

The British youngster was a little bit disappointed with his 13th position on the grid but still it isn’t the worst qualifying he had this year. Tomorrow in the warm-up session Webb will use a different set-up and improve so he will have a good race.
Danny Webb (13th, 1:42,08): “Today was not so good. In the morning session it went alright till I made the decision to go on dry tires. This afternoon the position wasn’t so bad but I know I can be a lot faster. I didn’t had a very good feeling and not comfortable. Also the suspension set-up is not really on the level I want but we work tonight on this and make it good for tomorrow. I’m confident for the race and I will be flat out. I want to thank once again my team for being strong because we are one man down.”

I want to thank my team for being strong as we are one mechanic short.”19-10-2008Disaster race for Danny Webb at Sepang

Because of this the British youngster got a drive trhough penalty and stopped the race after this penalty. Webb didn’t want to take the risk to crash with his injured finger fighting for the last positions.
Danny Webb (DNF): “Today has been such a let down. All weekend we were fast and the team was strong and we come to race day and everything went wrong. This morning when I woke up I really thought this is the race for the podium but it wasn’t. The bike wouldn’t start on the gird so we had to go from pit lane. That got me stressed and then I got a bad start. It just went from bad to worse and also the bike cut out. Then when I thought that I had all the bad luck, I had a ride through penalty. So that was the end of my race. I am fast enough for the podium but we just need some more luck. We will give it another go in Valencia. It is going to be all or nothing….”

I was about 1 second behind Scott and one lap I close on him and the next lap I dropped back a little. So it was hard to close. On the second to last lap Gadea passed me and I just could get back at him. He was a little bit faster than me and I had to let him go in the last lap. I would like to thank my team for doing a good job for me this weekend and also I would like to thanks Dr. Costa and his team for doing a good job on my shoulder this weekend.”

Danny Webb (18th, 2:00,125): “Today was not so good. We were not so far of the pole position time but it was very close. I feel like I have a good race pace and feel that I can make a good race. We had a few little problems in the session but nothing big and we will fix it for tomorrow.”
26-09-2008Provisional 4th row for Danny Webb at Motegi

Webb qualified on a provisional 16th position.
Danny Webb (16th, 2:04,012): “Today was a good day. In the morning we were fast in the wet and in the afternoon we were also fast. At the beginning of the session I was constantly in the top five but it got drier and drier. I think I left it one lap to late to change to the dry tires. We know that we are fast in both conditions because when it was getting dry at the end we was always in the top ten but I was one of the first rider to take the flag. Tomorrow we will be looking to have a good day.”

Danny Webb had a bad start and turned into the first corner at the 28th position. After three laps Webb was able to ride trough the field and was battle in the third group for the 15th position. Webb got stuck in this group because it was very difficult to pass Koyoma. After 75% of the race Webb succeeded to pass Koyama and pulled away one second. Sergio Gadea made a mistake in the race battling for first and got back on track and passed Webb. Webb used his slipstream and within 2 laps Webb pulled away three seconds from the group. Webb finished the race at the 11th position and grabbed 5 points for the Championship standings.
Danny Webb (11th): “It was good a race today. I didn’t had a good start and went even worse than my 21st start position by turning into the first corner on a 28 position. Unfortunally I got stuck in the third group and couldn’t pass Koyama. At the end I managed to pass him and pulled a second away from the group. Then Gadea passed me after he made a mistake and I used him to get away more from the group and pulled a gap of 3 seconds with only three laps to go. I finished 11th and I’m quite happy with that position after a couple races without points. Gives me a good feeling for the next Grand Prix at Donington which is my home Grand Prix.”
11-08-2008Danny Webb (DNF) retired at Sachsenring
The Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland didn’t bring what the DeGraaf Grand Prix Team expected. Stevie Bonsey was the only rider who finished the race and ended up on an 18th spot. Hugo van den Berg had to retire the race because of a technical failure. Also Danny Webb retired after a little cruise in the gravel.
After a wet warm-up session, the race started on a dry track. There were still drops of rain coming out of the sky but the race director confirmed the race as a dry race. Just after the chequered flag the rain was coming so the 250cc race went on a wet track.
Danny Webb had a good start but lost it in the first lap. The first lap we found Webb as 31st on the timesheets. After a couple of laps Webb managed to pass a lot of riders and moved up to the 24th position. Webb made a mistake in the second last turn and run off the track. Webb decided to come into the pit lane and didn’t want to risk a crash because of his collarbone.
Danny Webb (DNF): “My start was good but I messed up in the first lap. I was 31st! I could improve in the laps after the beginning and moved up to the 24th position. I wasn’t aggressive enough and made also a mistake and run off track. Then I decided to call it a day because I didn’t want to risk a crash. My collarbone going better every day and I want to give it a rest now and use the holiday to heal it so I will be 100% fit at Brno.”
31/08/2008Danny Webb (14th) scores two points at Misano

Webb put his head down and chased the field and end up on a nice 14th position. With this position the British rider scored two points for the championship and has a total of 28 points for this moment.
Danny Webb (14th): “The race was good for me, the position isn’t so good. I got court up in a first lap crash again. I stayed on but had more of less to stop because if I didn’t I would have ran another rider over. So by this time I was a long way behind the others. I pushed hard and made my way up. I got up to the 14th and stayed there. I am happy with the race. The first lap and the first two days weren’t good and at the end I have some points so now we can go full gas for the rest of the season.”
15/08/2008Good start of the weekend for Danny Webb (16th) at Brno
After the summerbreak the championship continues at the Cardion AB Grand Prix Ceske Republiky. Danny Webb was the fastest rider of the DeGraaf Grand Team and managed to qualify on the fourth row at the 16th position. Stevie Bonsey nearly had the same lap time as Webb but had to be satisfied with a 18th position. Hugo van den Berg rode to a disappointed 35th position.
In the hot Brno this morning started the first free practice. Danny Webb finished this session on an 18th position and Stevie Bonsey on the 23rd position. Hugo van den Berg had a crash in the beginning of the session and couldn’t ride anymore this session and end up on a 38th position.
Before the qualification there was treatment of rain and there were already some drops coming out of the sky. It stopped before the session started but the DeGraaf Grand Prix team decided to be the first one on the track. After three laps it really started to rain and the whole field of riders came into the pitlane. Danny Webb scored on that moment an 11th position and Stevie Bonsey was on a 23rd position. Hugo van den Berg was on a 28th position in the dry.
After ten minutes the rain stopped and everyone went out again to set fast lap times. Danny Webb lost a lot of places and dropped from the 11th to a 21st position. The last lap was faster than before but Webb lost his transponder and the lap time was not on the screens. Luckily the organization is also using manual timing and had the last lap of Webb and end up on a 16th position.
Danny Webb (16th, 2:11,688): “Today wasn’t so bad. I’m happy but I wanted to be a little bit more in the front. I improved every lap but we didn’t have the normal 30 minutes qualifying time because of the ‘rain break’. I think I can be faster and I will be tomorrow if it isn’t raining. I also want to work more on the set-up but I’m quite satisfied.”
16/08/2008Changeable weather circumstances stop Danny Webb (16th) riding second qualification
The grid positions of the Cardion AB Grand Prix Ceske Republiky didn’t change in the second qualification. Danny Webb will start tomorrow from the 4th row on the 16th position. Stevie Bonsey will start one row back from Danny on the 18th position. Hugo van den Berg stays on the 9th row will start tomorrow the race from the 35th position.
In the wet morning session Danny Webb managed to ride to the 10th position and was two seconds back of fastest rider Nicolas Terol.
In the second qualification Danny Webb and Stevie decided not to ride. The track was dry but light rain was dropping out of the sky. The plan was to wait some laps to watch the other riders if they can improve their lap times from the Friday. Those riders couldn’t improve the lap times and were way off their times. After ten minutes it started to rain serious and it had no use to go out on the track.
Danny Webb (16 th, 2:11,688): “On the wet track this morning it went pretty ok. Every lap I went faster and was getting more fait in the track. I didn’t ride in the qualification when it was clear that it had no use to ride. The lap times were far away from the times of yesterday. After 10 minutes it really started to rain and I didn’t wanted to take any risks. I had this weekend a dry and wet session and have a lot of fait for the race tomorrow.”
17/08/2008Unlucky race for Webb (DNF)
The Cardion AB Grand Prix Ceske Republiky race has brought Englishman Danny Webb and American Stevie Bonsey nothing. Danny Webb was already out in the second turn of the first lap and Stevie Bonsey couldn’t finish the race because of a broken muffler. Hugo van den Berg started from the 35th position and battles himself to a 25th position.
The race was short for the little British rider Danny Webb. After a bad start Webb got boxed in at the first turn and wanted to make the lost positions up in the second turn but lost the front. In his crash he took out the Japanese riders Koyama and Nagakami.
Danny Webb (DNF): "The race was very short. I felt very relaxed and chilled out and I was happy with everything the bike, the team, everything I got a ok start but got blocked in the first corner. So I was trying making it up going into the second corner. I was in the inside when the front slide away and the next thing I know I was in the gravel with two other riders. The worst thing was that it was riders I respect, Koyama and Taka Nakagami. Nakagami is a friend of mine and Koyama I respect a lot. The good thing was that they understood that it was a first lap thing. It always happens to someone and today it was me, so I will get my head down this week. I going to training hard and come back strong with a clear mind in Misano."
30/08/2008Disappointed second practice day for Danny Webb (20th) at Misano
The DeGraaf Grand Prix Team didn’t manage to get the results they wanted during the second qualifying session of the GP Cinzano di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini. Stevie Bonsey and Danny Webb will start tomorrow from the fifth starting row on respectively from the 17th and 20th position. Hugo van den Berg didn’t found the improvement he hoped for and will start tomorrow the race from the 39th position.
In the morning session Stevie Bonsey and Danny Webb didn’t came further than the fifth row on a 18th and 20th position. Hugo van den Berg finishes the session on a 38th position. The team was working hard on the set-up of the suspension. Young American Stevie Bonsey tested a different type of rear tire which appears to be the right choice in these weather circumstances. Danny Webb was also searching for a better set-up of his front fork but didn’t succeed to get the ideal set-up. Dutchman Hugo van den Berg tried different set-ups but he couldn’t make a big step forwards. After the session Van den Berg said that the reason of the bad lap times is him.
During the qualification session the team chooses for a different setting of the suspensions and different type of tires. From the data it seemed to be the right direction but after the session it wasn’t the right one. Stevie Bonsey couldn’t improve his lap time from the Friday and Danny Webb could improve but the step wasn’t big enough. The American and Englishman will be on the same starting row tomorrow. Hugo van den Berg improved himself but it didn’t bring him not further forward on the grid. Van den Berg will start the race tomorrow form the 39th spot at the very hot track of Misano.
Danny Webb (20th, 1:45,566): “The session this afternoon wasn’t the one I expected. We made some changes on the bike compare from this morning. It didn’t work out but we know now what’s going to work for the race. I still have a lot of confidence for the race tomorrow and will be up there.”
12-09-2008Difficult first day on wet Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Today it was the first time for everybody at the famous track Indianapolis Motor Speedway. During this rainy day of the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix the DeGraaf Grand Prix Team riders were not on the pace yet. Danny Webb was the fastest rider of the DeGraaf Grand Prix Team and qualified on a provisional 19th position. American Stevie Bonsey is riding his home grand prix this weekend but couldn’t make friends yet with the track and qualified on a provisional 22nd position. Hugo van den Berg didn’t qualify and is the first rider outside the qualification limit.
This morning at 08.30h local time the 125 class were the first ones to ride the Indianapolis track. With a lot of rain the riders started their first session and were searching for the ideal line. Danny Webb builds up this session and finished on an ok 11th position. Stevie Bonsey tried to ride fast lap times in the beginning but had a little crash. Because of this he missed valuable time and could only ride the last 10 minutes of the session and finished on a 29th position. Hugo van den Berg started the session well with positions between the 10th and the 15th. In the last 5 minutes he lost a lot of places and ended the session on a 22nd spot.
Also the qualification session was held in very wet circumstances. It wasn’t as wet as in the morning but the track felt the same for the riders. Again British rider Danny Webb was the fastest rider of the team and ended up on the 19th position. Webb wasn’t happy with this position.
Danny Webb (19th, 2:03,087): “Today was not so good. It has been wet all day. The morning session was ok. I went out in the afternoon and I was improving all the time. Every lap I improved but not enough. Tomorrow we will just have to give 110%. I’m going to go to the maximum!”
13-09-2008Danny Webb hits front row at Indy!!
During the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix there was finally sun in the afternoon. The qualification session was a dry session and British rider Danny Webb was happy with this situation. For the second time this season he parked his Aprilia on the front row. Stevie Bonsey rode to a 15th position and Dutch rider Hugo van den Berg ended the session on a disappointed 30th position.
In the morning session the track was wet because of the rain fall in the night before. In this session Danny Webb went much better than yesterday in these circumstances and finished the session on a 8th position. Stevie Bonsey was struggling in this session and couldn’t get a good pace and ended on a 20th spot. Hugo van den Berg had pretty ok session and was nearly the whole session in the top 20. At the end he ended on a 25th spot.
In the dry and hot qualification session Danny Webb managed to ride all the time fast lap times. The little British rider really liked this situation and was constantly in the top 10. Halway the session Webb came in, meanwhile on a 6th spot, for a new rear tire and went for it in de last 10 minutes. In the last minute Webb put his Aprilia on the second position and at the finish he still was on the front row on a great 4th position.
Danny Webb (4th, 1:51,000): “Today was the best day since Portugal. I felt good and went for it. It was the first time we were riding in the dry so I had to push to the limit. It worked it out for me and it put me on the front row. The whole weekend I have the fastest bike on top speed and I want to thank the team for that. I want to get a good start tomorrow and push for the podium.”
14-09-2008Interrupted race stops Danny Webb (15th) from top 10 charges
After the nice weather on Saturday and the Sunday morning the rain started directly after the warm-up session. One hour before the 125cc class it stopped raining and the track dried slowly but was dry at the start of the race. In the 14th lap of the 23 lap race it started to rain again. In the 17th lap the red flag was showed and the race was over.
Danny Webb started from the front row but messed up his start and his first lap. After the first lap Webb was in 20th position. After a couple of laps he found his rhythm and was riding the same lap times as the leaders. The little British teenager climbed up to a 13th position but lost this position in the last 3 laps because of the rain and finished 15th.
Danny Webb (15th): “The race wasn’t a good race for me. I got a bad start and almost crashed a few times on the first lap trying too hard to make up positions. All it did is made me loss them but when I got into the race pace my times were good. I was doing the times of the leader and I was catching people in front fast. Unfortunaly the rain came and I just slowed up because I didn’t want to crash I just wanted to finish. Hopefully in Japan the weather will be good and we can get a good result there as we now know the speed is there. I would like to thank my team for doing a great job this weekend the bike was good all weekend.”
26th SeptemberComments from Danny on the last few weeks
So off we went of to Brno and the first thing what happened is we didn’t have a hotel room !!.
After 1 hour of arguing with them we finally got a room, then got upgraded to a suit so all 3 riders were staying in that.
That weekend was not so good, we had some bad luck so its better we don’t talk about that.
Then we went to Misano and finally had a ok weekend. We walked 5km to go to a nice cloth shop in the town and didn’t buy anything Stevie and Hugo were not happy ha ha ha.
Then we had the race of the year! A Kart Race !
All the mechanics from the team were there. Jarno made a team and Marlon made a team. I was in Marlon’s team together with mechanic Bart and Rick.
This was the big one we had the Japs and the yanks come over for this one. Everyone was so nervous for this kart race.
We had a good GP and qualified 5th of 32 professional karting teams In the race we were fighting for the podium but ended in 4th position.
Unfortunately Marlon was not so fast but the best thing was that we kicked Jarno’s teams ass. They finish 6th and we were happy with this result ha ha ha.
So after all the fun we had the real work a week later in fast-food land America (Indy). We had a good weekend qualifying on the front row but the race was not as good. We had good pace but a bad start.
Now we know that we are fast enough to run at the front and I have confidence that I can get some good results for the rest of the year.
Now I am in Japan and can’t wait to get on track!
29/08/2008Danny Webb (17th) wrong tire choice at QP1 Misano
In a very hot Misano today started the first day for the GP Cinzano di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini. Stevie Bonsey seemed not to be bothered by the heat and qualified on a provisional 11th position. Danny Webb was a little bit more than half a second slower and ended today on a 17th spot. Hugo van den Berg was really struckiling today and was second last on a 38th position.
With temperatures of approxialy 24 degrees in the shadow, the lightest class started this morning with the first session at 09.00h. Danny Webb rode to a 19th position whereas Stevie Bonsey and Hugo van den Berg where way back from their teammate and finish on a 33rd and 38th position.
In the afternoon session the temperatures here even higher and went over the 30 degrees and the track temperature was 43 degrees. So the circumstances were completely different compare to the morning session. In the first session there was no grip and in the afternoon it changed into a lot of grip.
Danny Webb started the qualification session strong and stood even on top of the timesheets in the first 5 minutes. The little British man could stay in the first half of the session in the top 10. After his pitstop to change the rear tire for a new one, he dropped back to a 23rd position. The choice of the rear tire wasn’t the best choice but still Webb managed to climb back to a 17th spot.
Danny Webb (17th, 1:46,073): “The session was ok. It wasn’t the best session but we can improve on the bike a lot and also I can improve I was trying to hard mid way threw the session and at the end it was coming better I am confident for tomorrow and just have a good feeling that we will sort everything out. We will be there tomorrow.”
